Dozens Killed in Paramilitary Attack on Central Sudan Village

Um Garfa, North Kordofan, Sudan - A brutal paramilitary attack in the village of Um Garfa, located in central Sudan's North Kordofan state, has left at least 48 people dead, according to the monitoring group "Emergency Lawyers." The attack, which occurred on Sunday, July 13, 2025, has been attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and marks a significant escalation of violence in the already war-torn region.

The Emergency Lawyers reported that RSF fighters descended upon the village, located roughly 90 kilometers north of the contested city of Bara, and systematically razed homes while looting civilian property. Tragically, women and children are among the victims of this horrific act. Um Garfa's location on a crucial highway leading to Khartoum, which was recently reclaimed by the Sudanese army in March, highlights the strategic importance of the area in the ongoing conflict.

This latest atrocity underscores the worsening security situation in North Kordofan, a region that has witnessed intensified clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese army. Over the past weekend alone, the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 3,000 individuals have been forced to flee their homes in neighboring villages due to the escalating violence. The Sudanese army has been actively engaged in offensives aimed at retaking control of Bara, a strategically vital city in the region.

The conflict in Sudan, now entering its third devastating year, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, plunging the nation into a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale. The United Nations has declared the situation in Sudan the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis.

Disturbingly, this is not an isolated incident. Recent reports indicate that nearly 300 other civilians have been killed in separate RSF attacks within North Kordofan. These include the deaths of over 200 people in Shag Alnom and 46 in Hilat Hamid, with reports confirming that pregnant women and children were among those senselessly killed.

The international community has repeatedly called for an end to the violence in Sudan and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians. However, these calls have so far failed to stem the tide of bloodshed and displacement. The attack on Um Garfa serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities and a concerted effort to find a peaceful resolution to the protracted conflict that continues to ravage Sudan. The safety and well-being of Sudanese civilians remain gravely at risk as the fighting persists.
