Jakarta, Indonesia
— Mass protests have swept across Indonesia following the death of Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi driver who was fatally struck by a police tactical vehicle during demonstrations in Jakarta on Thursday, August 28.

What began as rallies over economic hardship and a controversial housing allowance for lawmakers has spiraled into nationwide unrest, drawing tens of thousands to the streets and igniting fierce criticism of law enforcement.

From Economic Grievances to National Outrage

Initially, the demonstrations centered on the government’s decision to approve a new housing allowance package for members of parliament, which critics described as excessive and insensitive amid rising food and fuel prices. Citizens, particularly in urban centers, voiced frustration over the growing gap between political elites and ordinary Indonesians struggling with inflation.

However, the situation dramatically escalated after Kurniawan death. Witnesses say he had joined protesters in Jakarta when a police tactical vehicle plowed into the crowd, fatally injuring him. Images and videos of the incident quickly spread on social media, fueling public anger and amplifying calls for accountability.

Violence in Multiple Cities

Protests have since erupted in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar, and other cities. Many demonstrations have turned violent as confrontations between protesters and police intensified.

In Makassar, South Sulawesi’s capital, protesters set fire to a government building. Authorities confirmed that three people were killed after being trapped inside the blaze, while five others suffered injuries. Vehicles and motorcycles were also set ablaze in several regions, with makeshift barricades erected in city streets.

Police reported dozens of arrests linked to property damage and clashes, though human rights groups have warned that excessive force is being used to disperse crowds.

Government and Police Response

President Prabowo Subianto addressed the nation late Thursday, extending his condolences to Kurniawan family and pledging a transparent investigation.

The loss of life is unacceptable. I have instructed the National Police to ensure full accountability, and I promise the process will be conducted openly and fairly,
 Prabowo said.

The National Police Chief has also issued a rare public apology to the family and to Indonesian citizens. Officials confirmed that seven officers who were inside the tactical vehicle at the time of the incident have been detained for questioning.

Still, many protesters remain skeptical, citing a long history of impunity for security forces accused of misconduct. Civil society organizations are urging the government to allow independent monitors to oversee the investigation.

Public Distrust and Rising Anger

For many Indonesians, the tragedy has become a symbol of broader frustrations with governance, inequality, and police behavior. Demonstrators have carried posters reading “Justice for Affan” and “Stop Police Violence.”

Social media campaigns with hashtags such as #JusticeForAffan and #ReformasiDikorupsi have trended across platforms, echoing calls for systemic reform. Analysts warn that unless the government takes credible steps to restore trust, unrest could deepen.

Human Rights Groups Call for Accountability

Local and international rights organizations have condemned the incident, urging Indonesia to take concrete measures to prevent future abuses. Amnesty International Indonesia stated that the killing highlighted “the dangers of unchecked police power during public demonstrations.”

The group also called for a review of crowd-control tactics and demanded protection for peaceful protesters.

Looking Ahead

The coming weeks may prove critical for Indonesia’s stability. Protest organizers say demonstrations will continue until their demands are met, including:

  • Justice for Affan Kurniawan death
  • Independent investigation of the police
  • Reconsideration of lawmakers’ housing allowances
  • Greater protections for peaceful assembly

Observers note that while the government has promised accountability, the credibility of that process will depend on transparency and the willingness to hold officers criminally responsible if wrongdoing is confirmed.

For now, Kurniawan death has become a rallying cry across Indonesia — transforming a protest about economic policy into a powerful movement for justice and reform.
