Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered sharp criticism of European leadership and the Ukrainian government, dismissing claims about Kupyansk and accusing European nations of actively hindering peace negotiations. He also issued a warning regarding the potential for a direct conflict with Europe.

The Military Situation in Kupyansk

Responding to claims by Ukrainian President Zelensky that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were still in Kupyansk, Putin suggested Kyiv's leaders were “living somewhere on another planet,” distracted by foreign travel and "begging for money."

Putin provided a detailed update on the strategic city of Kupyansk, which is divided by a river:

  • The right-bank part (largest, central area) is fully controlled by Russian forces.
  • The left-bank part is also under full Russian control.

Fighting is concentrated in Kupyansk-Uzlovaya, where Russian troops claim control of 600–650 buildings and expect to capture the entire area within days. He noted a large Ukrainian battalion remains blocked on the left bank and is being “liquidated.”

Putin emphasized that journalist safety will be ensured, including for Western correspondents, to report objectively on the conflict.

Europe Accused of Sabotaging Peace

Addressing the absence of European powers from recent negotiations, Putin claimed Europe withdrew from peace talks and now actively interferes with the US-led process. He outlined three key reasons for Europe’s detachment:

  1. Self-Removal: Europe voluntarily withdrew from close contact with Russia.

  2. Interference: European nations obstruct the US administration and Trump’s peace plan.

  3. No Peace Agenda: Europe is “on the side of war,” blocking negotiations and blaming Moscow.

Putin argued that European amendments to the peace plan are unrealistic, effectively sabotaging progress.

Warning on War with Europe and NATO Readiness

Responding to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on NATO readiness, Putin stated:

“We are not planning to fight with Europe, but if Europe decides to attack, we are ready right now.”

He compared a potential European conflict to the ongoing Ukraine war, which is being conducted surgically and carefully. If Europe initiates a war, Russia warned the situation could escalate rapidly.

“Piracy” and Naval Retaliation

Putin condemned recent attacks on Russian tankers, calling them “piracy” and illegal in neutral waters. He outlined potential Russian retaliation:

  • Expanded Strikes: Targeting Ukrainian port facilities and ships.
  • Targeting Supporting Nations: Possible actions against countries assisting Ukraine in attacks.

He suggested the most extreme measure could be cutting Ukraine off from the sea, eliminating its ability to engage in maritime attacks.
